The Meinig School recently hosted half a dozen high school students from the Southern Tier as part of a job shadowing program through the Career Development Council of Elmira, New York. Covering a three-county region in the southern tier, the Career Development Council coordinates partnerships that integrate the education system with the world of work so that learners will be successful in the workplace.
The high school visitors, all of whom had expressed a desire to pursue careers in science, listened attentively and asked questions while graduate student representatives from the Bonassar, Butcher, and Nishimura labs gave the tours. These graduate guides fielded questions about their individual research projects, from tissue engineering and cutting-edge neuroscience, to optics and image analysis. They demonstrated instrumentation used in their research as well as some of the products developed in their labs. Highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the BME field, they spoke about the research process and how often ideas from other fields can spark breakthroughs in understanding or development of products and processes. The high school visitors were impressed and engaged. Perhaps one or more of them will be inspired to pursue BME research as a career, maybe even at Cornell.
