2012 Top Ten Centers of Biomedical Research

The Hartwell Foundation officially announced its 2012 Top Ten Centers of Biomedical Research. The Foundation invites each selected institution to nominate four individuals to compete for the Hartwell Individual Biomedical Research Awards, which provide funding to individual researchers in the United States for three years at $100,000 direct cost per year.

The Hartwell 2012 Top Ten list includes:

Cornell University

Duke University

St Jude Children’s Research Hospital

The Johns Hopkins University

The University of Michigan

The University of Wisconsin Madison

University of California, Davis

University of California, San Diego

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

University of Virginia

Each Top Ten institution that fully participates in The Hartwell Foundation process qualifies to receive a $100,000 Biomedical Research Fellowship to fund one postdoctoral candidate of their choice for two years.

In addition, two institutions were selected at-large for limited participation in the competition: Yale University and Case Western Reserve University are eligible to compete for Individual Biomedical Research Awards by nominating two individuals in the same process as the Hartwell Top Ten. This will be the 3rd year of partial participation for Yale and the 2nd year for Case Western.

In selecting each research center of excellence, The Hartwell Foundation takes into account the shared values the institution has with the Foundation relating to children's health, the presence of an associated medical school and biomedical engineering program, and the quality and scope of ongoing biomedical research. The Foundation also considers the institutional commitment to support collaboration, provide encouragement, and extend technical support to the investigator, especially as related to translational approaches and technology transfer that could promote rapid clinical application of research results.
