    Multiple positions for postdoctoral researchers in the Schaffer-Nishimura Lab.

    In the Schaffer-Nishimura Lab, we take a multidisciplinary approach to studying the in vivo cellular behaviors that underlie health and disease. We develop optics-based tools and techniques to enable detailed studies of cellular motion, interactions, and function, all in living animals. These approaches enable us to study the cellular behaviors that drive normal and disease physiology in ways not previously possible, with major research projects in neuroscience and the neurobiology of disease, cardiovascular disease, and stem cell biology.

    We have openings for talented post-doctoral researchers in several projects:

    • Advancing the use of three-photon microscopy for imaging neural activity in the brain and spinal cord of mice and using this approach to elucidate the neural activity patterns that encode limb motion while walking over simple and complex terrain.
    • Developing optical methods to record activity from large ensembles of individual neurons using spectral information from multiple variants of genetically encoded voltage and calcium indicators, with applications in both neuroscience research and neuroprosthetics.
    • Understanding age-related deficits in how the stem cell niche recovers from damage using time-lapse, in vivo, multiphoton microscopy of intestinal crypts through abdominal windows in mice.
    • Using in vivo imaging to study the causes and consequences of microvascular blood flow disruptions in animal models of neurodegenerative disease, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic approaches.

    The SN Lab fosters a highly interdisciplinary and diverse research environment, with current lab members coming from six continents and having research backgrounds that include physics, engineering, computer science, neuroscience, physiology, and medicine.   • Postdoctoral Researchers: In vivo multiphoton microscopy for in rodent models of heart failure

    The link between microvascular health and cardiac function has long been assumed but has been difficult to study. New intravital imaging tools such as two-photon microscopy have revolutionized physiology studies with the capability to observe the behavior of single cells within an intact, living animal. For example, the capacity to visualize brain microvasculature at the resolution of single capillaries has generated new ideas about the role of blood flow in health and diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, we have extended such imaging capabilities to imaging the beating heart with an anesthetized mouse. This tool could reveal new phenomena in the coupling of vascular function with cardiac health and diseases. 

    The Schaffer-Nishimura Lab is looking for a postdoc interested in applying and further developing in vivo cardiac imaging methods with applications in two disease models. In collaboration with the Chilian Lab (Northeast Ohio Medical University), we will use intravital imaging to study a newly discovered link between Takotsubo syndrome and vasculature. Takotsubo syndrome, also known as Broken Heart Syndrome, is a form of heart failure that can be triggered by severe emotional stress. While the cause is unknown, recent work suggest that constriction of vessels could contribute to the dysfunction of the muscle cells. In a second application, we have recently observed capillary-level dysfunction in mouse models of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Although accounting for about half of heart failure patients, there are few treatments for this type of heart failure. In both disease, in vivo imaging enables us to make unprecedented measurements of blood flow, cardiomyocytes, and inflammatory cell interactions. 

    Both candidates with PhD training in instrumentation or quantitative science with an interest in biological applications as well as PhDs with physiology or biomedical backgrounds with an interest in advanced optical tools could be a good fit. The Schaffer-Nishimura lab is a cross-disciplinary, diverse lab so a willingness to collaborate is considered a strength.

  • Postdoctoral positions at the intersection of adaptive optics and computational microscopy (Adie Lab)

    Wavefront shaping and computational imaging approaches are at the forefront of pushing the imaging depth limits of optical microscopy. We are looking for 2 postdoctoral candidates who are excited about integrating wavefront shaping and computational imaging approaches to enable ultra-deep OCT and multimodal OCT + multiphoton microscopy. The required qualifications are a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Biomedical Engineering / Bioengineering or related field.  Preference will be given to candidates who have experience that is relevant to the following areas: 

    • Adaptive optics or computational microscopy
    • Design and setup of optical imaging systems (OCT/multiphoton microscopy/photoacoustic microscopy)
    • Scientific computing and programming skills (MATLAB, LabVIEW, C or C++, GPU programming).

    The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record, good communication skills, and is someone who works effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. 

    Each position is initially for 1 year, with the possibility of extension contingent on funding and performance.  Compensation is commensurate with experience.

    Who We Are

    The De Vlaminck Lab at Cornell University has an open Technician III position to support our research into precision and genomic medicine. Our goal is to develop genomics-based medicine approaches to study and diagnose infectious and immune related diseases.

    What You Will Do

    Important: This is a one-year term position; possibility of renewal based on available funding & performance.

    The Technician will specifically support our research into liquid biopsy technologies: short fragments of cell-free DNA and RNA circulate in blood, urine and other biofluids and offer an information-rich window into human physiology. Together with collaborators at Weill Cornell Medicine, UCSF, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and the Global Health Labs, we are pursuing technologies and applications of cell-free nucleic acids as liquid biopsies for infectious and immune-mediated disease. Example application areas include, tuberculosis, stem cell transplantation, kidney transplantation, COVID-19, and MISC.

    A position for a research associate is available in the group of Iwijn De Vlaminck at Cornell University. This will be a two-year appointment, with possible extension based on performance.

    Position description:

    Our lab’s mission is to improve human health through the development of precision medicine technologies to study and diagnose infectious, immune and microbiome-associated disease. To achieve this goal, our lab pursues research in two areas: i) We investigate technologies and applications of circulating cell-free DNA in diagnostic medicine, and ii) We investigate single-cell and spatial sequencing technologies, including technologies developed in-house, to study infection in native, complex tissues and to spatially profile bacterial microbiomes and host-microbiome interactions. 

    The candidate for the open research associate in our lab will investigate host-microbiome interactions. The efforts of the candidate will be split between the development of new technologies to spatially map host-microbiome interactions in-situ, and the application of these technologies to study host-microbiome interactions in health and disease.   • Postdoctoral position in skeletal muscle spatial transcriptomics

    Applications are sought for a postdoctoral fellow position in research groups of Ben Cosgrove and Iwijn De Vlaminck at Cornell University. This position will develop and apply novel spatial total RNA-sequencing technologies to study skeletal muscle regeneration and disease. Recent collaborative advances by the De Vlaminck and Cosgrove laboratories have developed new approaches for studying muscle regeneration (De Micheli et al, Cell Reports, 2020) and cardiac infection biology (Mantri et al, Nature Cardiovascular Research, 2022) at the single-cell level. Our labs have built novel technologies for spatial profiling of the total transcriptome through in situ polyadenylation to achieve unprecedented complexity and resolution of non-coding and viral RNA species (McKellar et al, Nature Biotechnology, 2022). Further, we have exploited single-cell and spatial transcriptomics analyses to generate large-scale data atlases of skeletal muscle regeneration to explore the spatial context of cell-cell communication (McKellar et al, Communications Biology, 2021).

    This position will play a central role in several multi-PI collaborative projects with the goal of applying total transcriptomic profiling in single-cell and spatial workflows to study human and skeletal muscle development and disease pathogenesis. This work will entail genomic and transcriptomic technology development and application and a suite of bioinformatic data analyses. Applicants are not required to have expertise in all of these specific skills, but do need a familiarity with quantitative and/or computational aspects of biology. These research projects are supported by multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Supervisors will actively support the candidate’s applications for postdoctoral training fellowship, including internal training grant opportunities. This will be a one-year appointment, with annual extension possible based on satisfactory performance.

    Job Description: 
    Successful candidates will co-design, implement and evaluate a unique Studio Pedagogy in collaboration with instructional faculty and teaching assistants in partnership with faculty in the Department of Architecture. They will create and implement new integrated classroom training activities, lecture materials, and assessments that will be tested and improved between courses and over semesters. Further, Fellows will design innovative individualized training resources to complement classroom learning and preparation. They will co-lead educational activities with faculty, teaching assistants and support staff. This rich educational environment will support rigorous engineering education research evaluating student and faculty shifts in learning and teaching. They further will engage with departmental faculty who have established engineering education expertise. Finally, Fellows will participate in Cornell’s nationally-recognized community engagement and educational outreach programs.

  • Postdoctoral position in cardiac developmental mechanobiology and regenerative medicine

    Applications are now being sought for a postdoctoral research fellow to study mechanisms by which mechanical forces induce and regulate fetal cardiac morphogenesis, growth and remodeling. The Cardiovascular Developmental Bioengineering Laboratory at Cornell University, led by Prof. Jonathan Butcher, has pioneered the engineering of quantitative live imaging, biomechanical measurement, and mechanobiological stimulation systems to uniquely test rigorous hypotheses of how mechanosensitive switches operate to control morphogenetic decisions locally within the heart and its valves. His group has further developed multi-scale, multi-valent bioinformatics/computational strategies to model and predict mechanisms of morphogenesis that can be directly verified in vitro and in vivo. We incorporate both chick experimental and mouse genetic model systems, as well as utilize engineered emergent in vitro test platforms using primary cells. His lab has been continuously funded by the NIH and AHA for over 15 years, and publishes regularly in high impact journals. Further, his group collaborates with multiple complementary experts both at Cornell and around the world. Fellows will train with and help lead a dynamic transdisciplinary team while preparing themselves for their independent career. 

    This NIH funded position will pursue one or more of the following broad research goals: 1) Elucidate the in vivo mechanobiological regulatory network governing embryonic heart morphogenesis via localized hemodynamic perturbation in vivo, 2) Determine the interrelationships between growth factor signaling and mechanical stimulation in the normal and abnormal development of cardiac tissues.  3) Integrate the global and local biomechanical and molecular datasets in developing embryonic hearts towards a multi-scale computational model of ventricular and/or outflow tract morphogenesis.

Our team has developed novel 3D in vitro engineered tissue models of heart valve tissues enabling mechanistic investigation of emergent multi-cellular phenomena. These include novel test beds for applying mechanical forces to complex 3D tissues as well as the ability to measure local anisotropic biomechanical changes during tissue remodeling. We also test these mechanisms in vivo with unique animal model systems and in human tissues. Our goal is to discover and validate novel pharmacological solutions for heart valve diseases. We have developed a rich collaborative network of molecular geneticists, computational biologists, and clinicians from all over the world. 

    This is an NIH funded position that is further scaffolded by a variety of training grants in the space, as well as access to a unique blend of advanced engineering and life science technologies, intellectual expertise, and professional development resources. The lab is supported by grants from the NIH, NSF, and NY State. Our lab has trained and mentored over a half-dozen tenured and tenure track faculty in the United States and overseas.

  • Ph.D. and Post-doctoral Fellow Positions in diffusion MRI of cancer

    Ph.D. and postdoctoral positions in diffusion MRI of cancer are available at the MRI Research Institute (MRIRI), Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Research will primarily focus on developing advanced diffusion MRI methods to quantitatively image cancer microstructural and functional properties, particularly in head and neck cancer and breast cancer. The overarching goal of this work is to develop novel diffusion prognostic parameters that can help tailor cancer treatment for individual patients. Specifically, this study may include the development of diffusion models to extract microstructural parameters, numerical simulation framework to investigate the association of cellular properties with diffusion MRI, advanced acquisition methods, and AI-based analysis methods for translational applications. 

    The ideal candidate should have experience in MR physics, reconstruction algorithms and/or pulse sequence programming. Prior experience in diffusion experiments and microstructure modeling would be a plus. Experience with Matlab, Python, and Siemens IDEA environments are also desirable. The candidate will be expected to participate in both independent and collaborative projects. Salary is commensurate with experience.
