Gregory Fedorchak and Erik Zavrel were selected as one of ten finalists for the CIMIT Primary Care Prize Competition
Gregory Fedorchak, a 3rd year Ph.D. student in Dr. Jan Lammerding’s Lab, and Erik Zavrel, a 6th year Ph.D. student in Dr. Arthur Spielman’s Lab , under the mentorship of Dr. Matthew Ebben, Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College and Director of Laboratory Operations for the WCMC Center for Sleep Medicine, were selected as one of ten finalists for the CIMIT Primary Care Prize Competition. Fedorchak met Zavrel during the 2014 BME Summer Immersion term at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Their proposal, "Active Distal Limb Heating for the Treatment of Insomnia,” is intended as a non-pharmacological wearable/e-textile based treatment for insomnia, a prevalent medical condition that afflicts 10% of the general adult population and more than 50% of the elderly population and carries wide ranging cognitive and behavioral consequences. Zavrel submitted a second proposal that was also selected entitled, "Tongue Strengthening as an Alternative Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea." His project is intended to reduce upper airway collapsibility during sleep through targeted isometric exercises. Finalists are selected based on their project’s potential in direct impact in primary care. They submitted their final proposal on August 17, 2015. Winners will be determined in September.
