Erik Zavrel receives Grand Prize at 2017 Design of Medical Devices (DMD) Conference

Congratulations to Erik Zavrel, a Meinig School Ph.D. student (Doershuck Lab) who won the Grand Prize and $500 in the Three-in-Five Competition at the 2017 Design of Medical Devices Conference, held April 11-13 in Minneapolis, MN. Zavrel won for his presentation, "An Active Distal Limb Warming Device for Insomnia Treatment," which describes a device that warms hands and feet to induce distal vasodilation, promote net body heat loss, and facilitate sleep onset.
A Ph.D. candidate at the Meinig School, Zavrel ‘s research focuses on the development of novel non-pharmacological, device-based interventions for sleep disorders. He conducts clinical trials at Weill Cornell's Center for Sleep Medicine in New York City.
The DMD Three-in-Five Competition grants participants immediate feedback about their projects from leaders in medical technology research, engineering & development. Authors of the top ten accepted contributed papers that describe medical devices with commercial potential give a five minute presentation composed of no more than three slides. After presenters complete their pitches they answer questions from a panel of leading medical technology innovators. The Judge's Panel bases their decision upon four factors: 1) Quality of clinical need statement (problem); 2) Technical soundness of research (solution); 3) Presentation Quality; 4) Fundability.
The top three presenters are awarded $500 and notified at the conference’s Keynote Luncheon.
