Yunye Gong wins Google Ph.D. fellowship in machine learning
Yunye Gong is a fourth year Ph.D. candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell, where she works with Professor Peter Doerschuk (ECE, BME) to understand the heterogeneity of biological nanoparticles like viruses by learning a generative mathematical mechanical model.
The fact that a student from ECE is working with an advisor who is a member of both BME and ECE on a structural biology application illustrates the great flexibility of the Graduate Field system for Ph.D. level education at Cornell!
Gong and Prof. Doerschuk work in collaboration with Professor John E. Johnson from The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, whose career has been focused on understanding the lifecycle of viruses, especially maturation and infection, with obviously important implications for human health. Gong joined Cornell in Fall 2013 after receiving her bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Visit the Doerschuk group website to learn more.
