Prof. David Putnam Promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure
The BME Department is very pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. David A. Putnam to Associate Professor with tenure effective February 1, 2008. Dr. Putnam has been an exceptional colleague and his performance is outstanding.
Dr. Putnam received his BS in Pharmacy from Albany College and PhD in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Utah (which has a very strong program in this area). He did a post-doctoral fellowship with Bob Langer at MIT. His ideas as a post-doctoral fellow led to his co-founding TransForm Pharmaceuticals in 2000 where he served as a senior scientist. Dr. Putnam joined Cornell in 2002.
Dr. Putnam has established a highly recognized research program in novel biomaterials and drug/nucleic acid delivery systems. These efforts have received important external recognitions. The three most important are the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Early Career Award (phase 1 and 2), an NSF CAREER Award, and the Controlled Release Society Young Investigator Award. In addition he received a Young Investigator Award from Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and a DuPont Science & Engineering Award; also he is a member of editorial boards for five journals, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Bausch & Lomb.
In the area of teaching and education, Prof. Putnam's record is truly outstanding. He has received twice the College of Engineering Teaching Award (2004 and 2007). We suspect that he is the only person to receive these awards twice while being an Assistant Professor. Professor Putnam's class evaluations are consistently outstanding. In addition to his classroom role Professor Putnam has been a highly effective mentor for his students at all levels (undergraduate through post doctoral).
In addition to his outstanding records in research and teaching, Professor Putnam's level of service to the profession and Cornell have been numerous and important.
In all regards, Professor Putnam has been an outstanding colleague. We also expect Professor Putnam will continue to grow in impact and stature. Congratulations and best wishes to Professor Putnam!
