CHIRON BIOPHARMACEUTICALS PRESIDENT ELECTED TO CALIFORNIA HEALTHCARE INSTITUTE BOARD

(LA JOLLA, Calif., May 10, 2005) ­ Craig A. Wheeler, president, Chiron BioPharmaceuticals, was elected to the board of directors of California Healthcare Institute (CHI). CHI is a non-profit public policy research organization representing leading California academic institutions, biotechnology, medical device, and pharmaceutical firms.

Wheeler joined Chiron Corporation as president, Chiron BioPharmaceuticals, in August 2001. Previously, he was a senior member of The Boston Consulting Group's (BCG) health care practice and a key contributor to the firm's practice in hospital strategy, disease management, and pharmaceutical capabilities. Before joining BCG, Wheeler worked for Merck & Co., where he served as a senior engineer in process development. He also worked as a financial analyst for Hybritech. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Wheeler has promoted research investment and cooperation in both cancer and infectious disease through his work with the Rockefeller Foundation to establish research partnerships for underserved diseases, as a member of the IBM Life Science Strategic Advisory Council, and as a member of Cornell University’s Biomedical Engineering Advisory Board and Life Sciences Advisory Board. He has also recently joined the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research’s Board of Associates and has worked with The National Dialogue on Cancer to promote cooperation on cancer research between industry, government, and academia.
