Chris Schaffer Wins NSF CAREER Award

The National Science Foundation announced that Assistant Professor Chris Schaffer will receive a 2009 CAREER award for his proposal, "Optics in Biological Research, Education, and Outreach." The NSF CAREER awards support innovative research and education ideas by junior faculty. The award will fund efforts by Professor Schaffer's research group to develop optical techniques for targeted genetic manipulation of neurons in the brain of live rodents, enabling studies of, for example, the functional connectivity between brain cells. The award will also support continued innovation in pedagogical strategies for undergraduate biomedical engineering courses and new outreach efforts by Professor Schaffer.
