David J. Skorton

Dr. David J. Skorton's research has been on cardiovascular systems with an emphasis on imaging and image analysis. In particular, Dr. Skorton has special expertise in image analysis (digital processing) and techniques associated with application of ultrasound and MRI to myocardial tissue characterization. Among his engineering contributions is the development of methods of automated border detection using graph searing principles. Specifically, he has demonstrated how to use a sequence of images to gain insights when these methods fail with a single image (IEEE Trans Med Imaging 14:42-55, 1995). He does not currently have an active laboratory.
Dr. Skorton’s clinical interests include congenital heart disease and heritable connective tissue disease in adolescents and adults. Dr. Skorton was co-founder and co-director of the University of Iowa Adolescent and Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic. He also served as the director of the Cardiovascular Image Processing Laboratory. Dr. Skorton is a national leader in research ethics and was the past-president of the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc., which is the first entity to accredit protection programs in human research.
Dr. Skorton was previously the President at the University of Iowa, where he was also Professor of Internal Medicine, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. He has been a member of the editorial boards for 12 journals and has provided national service to the American Heart Association, American Society of Echocardiography, American College of Cardiology, and American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
